Harvard University: Reason vs faith or reason and Faith?
Harvard University is the university where Terzaghi worked as a Professor of Civil Engineering, and Casagrande began his job as an immigrant to US who came here with $400 equivalent money. It will not be wrong to say that Geotechnical Engineering was borne at Harvard, and if you do not agree with this, you can at least say that Geotechnical Engineering was nortured at Harvard, and later moved to MIT along with Casagrande (If you want to know more about them in more detail, read Casagrande Memorial(?) Volume). So, what?
Recently, Harvard University announced that it will change its course of education, and move to "REASON AND FAITH", and leave History course behind. In the new model, it will ask its students to take courses in FAITH and RELIGON and the courses they will use in future. It looks like that they are leaving the old notion of "LEARNING for LEARNING" (Time, March 5, 2007) far behind almost on the rear row. Some people might say that "FAITH" lining up with "REASON" in the same row means that Harvard is now overrun by Hardliners "(Extremists)", otherwise how could you move FAITH ahead on front line and make it able to line up with REASON in the same row? University education should have been founded on "REASON". "Faith" should not get equal rank with the "Reason", at least in education at such a prestigious university.
In this model, students are required to takes courses on religion and faith, but the history is not in the list of the required courses. Here, I do not understand why should not we study history as a required course? If our kids don't study history, where will they find their real models and heros? If they don't find models, how will they dream? Just the few living celebrity on TV channel that mainly focus on Celebrity scandals? Fashion models?
What will happen to our model based culture where our current citizens dream to follow the footsteps of our heros illustrated in the history books for example: Newton, Banjamin Franklin, George Washington, Terzaghi to Einstien? If we forget to honor them, and start to honoring the mythical heros in the books of religion and faith who produced results magically rather than based on resoning, then we will rather focus ourselves on day dreams, and forget to explore reasons. It will slowly erase the gray zones, and turn the world into black and white zones, and it will not take long time to turn the world into the hands of religious extremists: some people started to question whether the current war is a war between faith based extremists? The current change in education model at Harvard might be an evidence or a by-product of rise of such extremisim in the world. It will a systematically erase the gray zone that bridged or tried to act as a bridge between these extremists. Should this model be copied to other universities? and bring FAITH on front line?
