Geotech vs Geomech (Geotechnical vs Geomechanics)
When you google search Geomech word results so badly (Geomech and Geomechanics separately produce each about 500,000 pages, combined search produces about 40,000, while Geotech or Geotechnical produces about 10million pages) that I wonder why Geomech word is not so popular?
Is it because Geomech is a part of either Geotech / Geotechnical world or this means something different and refers to a small community comprised of folks most closely working on numerical methods, modeling or in mining aspect of geotechnical or ISRM folks or non-ISSMGE folks trying to run parallel boat to establish their own identity and keep in touch with other folks who resembles similarity? In my opinion, all most all of them can be categorized as a member of ISSMFE: (not the current ISSMGE) soil mechanics or foundation engineering or rock mechanics or engineering geology or geotechnical aspect of mining engineering.
In my personal opinion, the majority of folks who use Geomech or Geomechanics these days to refer to their profession or their work, are using Geomech as a replacement to Geotech can be categorized as non-ISSMGE Group of people, who are certainly brilliat, but were alienated by the core group that has strong grip on ISSMGE. It is very distinct among IACMAG top brasses. Well, some of them might say, "hey we are participating in ISSMGE activities or we were not working at ISSMGE, not because we were not offered a chance but because we have some important biz at IACMAG". Well, it might be a excuse, but it is not a real reason. ISSMGE certainly is highest body in Geotech and / or Geomech profession, and serving there is certainly an important job and an opportunity.
In my personal experience (watching closely), it is happening because ISSMGE is very politicalized world of Geotechnics if you don't mind to hear, more precisely hijacked (I think this word rightly describes the pattern of performances at ISSMGE) by a group of people who don't want ISSMGE to be a free international society: T. Delay Syndrome).
That is the reason Geomech or Geomechanics words are used in parallel by non-ISSMGE top brasses who are in fact Geotech Professionals. I will say that the formation of IACMAG in late 1970s/ beginning of 1980s can be attributed to this pattern.
